The Myth of “Sitting Up Straight”: Why Comfort Matters More Than Perfect Posture
Why forcing your shoulders back at your desk may create more tension — and why movement, variety and a more natural posture can feel better.

Spending long hours in front of a screen, moving from one meeting to another or simply staying in the same position for too long can leave the neck, shoulders and upper back feeling tired and tense.
When this happens, one of the most common pieces of advice is: “Sit up straight and pull your shoulders back.” It sounds sensible, but maintaining a deliberately rigid position for long periods can sometimes create even more effort.
The human body is designed to move and adapt. When we spend many hours working at a desk, it is natural for our posture to change throughout the day. The head may move forward, the shoulders may relax inward and certain areas can begin to feel less comfortable after remaining in similar positions for too long.
Trying to correct this by continuously holding the chest up and pulling the shoulders backwards can simply replace one fixed position with another. Instead of searching for a single “perfect” posture, it can be more useful to introduce variety.
Changing position regularly, standing up, moving the shoulders, gently rotating the upper body, walking for a few minutes or adjusting the working environment can all help break up long periods of stillness.
Breathing can also change during demanding or stressful periods. Taking a moment to slow down, breathe more comfortably and allow the shoulders to relax can be a simple way to interrupt the sense of physical tension that builds during a busy day.
At Quiroyanna, movement and mobility are approached individually rather than through rigid postural rules. Depending on the person, sessions may incorporate personalised movement, Pilates, mobility, stretching or massage as part of a broader approach to feeling more comfortable in the body.
Good posture does not have to mean holding yourself perfectly still. Sometimes the most comfortable posture is simply the next one.
