If you are thinking about starting Pilates in Fuengirola, a first class can be a useful way to see what works for you. It gives you a feel for the practice and lets you judge whether the teaching style, pace and format suit you.
This September, Fuengirola's European Week of Sport programme offers an opportunity to try Pilates in Los Boliches. Whether you attend one of these public activities or book a class independently, there are a few things worth noticing before you decide how to continue.
A chance to try Pilates in Los Boliches
Fuengirola Town Hall's September 2026 programme lists free public Pilates sessions at Plaza Pedro Cuevas on Thursday 24 September at 9 am and 11 am, and on Tuesday 29 September at 9 am. You can check the details in the Fuengirola Town Hall announcement.
These are municipal activities organised as part of Fuengirola Town Hall's programme. They are not organised by Quiroyanna, and Quiroyanna is not involved in the municipal programme.
Before you go, check for any last-minute changes and confirm with the organiser whether you need to register or bring anything. Information checked on 19 September 2026.
A first experience can help you understand how much guidance you would like, which pace feels comfortable and whether that format could fit naturally into your week.
Before your first class: explain your starting point
You do not need to know the names of the exercises. Simply mention whether this is your first time, you are returning to exercise after a break or you already do another activity but are new to Pilates. That short conversation helps the instructor understand where you are starting from.
It is also useful to explain what you want from the class. You may want to learn at an unhurried pace, set aside time to move or get back into a regular practice. Knowing what matters to you will make it easier to assess the experience afterwards.
Before attending, check that the class is suitable for beginners and ask what you should bring. If you have an injury, persistent pain or concerns about which activity is appropriate for your health, speak to a healthcare professional first. The NHS Pilates guidance for beginners explains that its exercises are general and are not intended to treat a particular cause of pain or health condition.
What to notice during your first class
Can you follow the instructions?
It is normal for some instructions to take more than one attempt to understand. Notice whether you can see the demonstration, hear the explanation and ask for a movement to be shown again. There should be room for those questions.
Can you work at your own pace?
If a movement feels too demanding or you are unsure how to do it, say so. Pausing, watching another demonstration or asking for an alternative are all part of learning. If you feel pain or become unwell, stop and tell the instructor. If the problem continues or concerns you, seek healthcare advice.
Do you feel comfortable asking questions?
Being able to say “I don't understand” or “I need to go more slowly” matters in both group and one-to-one sessions. Feeling comfortable enough to ask makes it easier to learn without trying to match somebody else's pace.
Group or one-to-one Pilates: what to consider
You may enjoy practising alongside other people, or you may prefer more time to understand each movement individually. You can begin in a group suited to your level or choose a private session. The useful question is which format fits the way you like to learn and the circumstances of your week.
A one-to-one session gives you more time to pause, understand each movement, adjust the pace and progress according to your experience and aims.
If you are looking for a shared practice and a regular class in your diary
Is there a beginner group, how many people attend and how are questions handled?
If you are looking for more time to understand each movement
How does a one-to-one session work, and how is it adapted to your experience?
If you are looking for a way back after a break
Which option allows you to revisit the basics and work at your current pace?
If you are looking for a routine that fits your budget
What is the total price, what does it include, when do class packs expire, and what are the rescheduling and cancellation terms?
If you are considering personalised Pilates in Fuengirola, the personalisation should be visible in the initial conversation, the choice of exercises, the explanations and the way your learning is reviewed over time.
A small group can also offer attentive teaching; numbers alone do not tell you everything. What matters is how the class is organised and whether there is enough space for questions.
If you would rather continue through public activities, the municipal Pilates information is a useful starting point. Check current timetables, availability and registration with the Town Hall's Sports Department.
Turning your first class into a regular practice
Choose a time that works in your real week
If you live, work or are staying in Los Boliches, allow for the journey, time to change and the trip back. The same applies if you are travelling from another part of Fuengirola. You may enjoy a class and still find it difficult to maintain if it does not fit your actual schedule.
Before buying a large class pack, check what happens if you cannot attend one week and whether a class can be moved or made up later.
Start gradually
If you are returning after a break, you do not need to regain everything at once. Talk to the person leading your sessions about where to begin and how to progress.
The WHO Guidelines on Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour advise adults who are not currently meeting the recommendations to start with small amounts of physical activity and gradually increase the frequency, intensity and duration over time.
There is no single Pilates frequency that suits everyone. Your starting point should make sense for your circumstances, aims and the other physical activity in your week.
Note what you would repeat and what you would change
After the class, take a minute to complete these three sentences:
I understand this better now…
Next time, I would like to ask…
The time I can realistically keep free is…
Your answers can help you prepare for the next class. If the pace, atmosphere or format did not feel right, you can try a different option before deciding how to continue.
Frequently asked questions about starting Pilates
Do I need to be flexible before joining a class?
You do not need a particular level of flexibility to join a beginner class. What matters is that the session can accommodate your starting point. Mention any relevant limitations and seek healthcare advice first if you have concerns about your health.
Should I choose mat or Reformer Pilates?
The equipment is only part of the decision. The class level, quality of the explanations and support given to beginners also matter. Learning what each format involves and trying it can help you decide which you prefer. You can always change later.
What if I can only manage one class a week?
One class can be a practical starting point. Being able to keep that time free does not necessarily mean that this frequency covers all your physical activity needs; your aims and the way you move during the rest of the week also matter.
Your next step
After your first class, you may have a clearer sense of what you enjoyed, how much guidance you would like and which time you can realistically maintain. Those three points give you a useful basis for choosing what comes next.
